Whenever we talk about cricket commentary, the name Tony Greig often comes to our minds. Tony Greig and Rechie Benaud were born on the same date in different years. They both were two different players with different personalities who came from different backgrounds, however, their work was to turn the live telecast of cricket into exciting words.

Well, in this blog we have talked about Tony Greig. He was the only cricket commentator in the history of modern cricket who would make a boring telecast more interesting with his exciting commentary. He had the art to engage the audience with the game.

No one can forget India vs Australia match which was played in the year 1998 when Sachin Tendulkar was batting at the crease and Tony Greig was on absolute fire. He always wanted to add some extra effort during the live telecast which would eventually make the audience crazy. Sachin Tendulkar’s half of the innings are incomplete without the commentatory of sir Tony Greig. You might have observed that whenever we watch some old cricket videos of Sachin Tendulkar, most of them have the voice of Tony Greig.

He was not just a good commentator but a great TV presenter as well. He would do pitch reports and post-match presentations after the matches.

HERE IS THE GIST OF TONY GREIG’S CRICKETING CAREER: –

He was born in South Africa, his father was a Scottish immigrant while his mother was a South African lady. He completed his schooling in South Africa however he played cricket from the English team because of his father’s Scottish citizenship. He could bowl at a medium pace and off-spin and was a right-handed batsman. Later he became the captain of the English cricket team between 1775-1977. He was 6.6Ft. tall which would make him the more dominating bowler on the field. He was indeed the most charismatic TV presenter ever.
According to Harsha Bhogle, Tony Greig had always been curious and updated about the telecast and he would talk to the tech team, cameramen, and other crew to understand how technology works in cricket. He also said that nobody could ever prepare for a match other than Tony Greig. And due to his vast knowledge and exceptional speaking skills, he would make the crowd crazier with his commentary.
But very few people knew that behind all of his charismatic characteristics Greig was a patient of epilepsy. He even had an epileptic fit during his 1st Cricket match. And to raise awareness amongst people he also became a board member of Epilepsy Action Australia for about 2 decades.
In 2012 Tony Greig was diagnosed with lung cancer, and a few months later he died of a sudden heart attack at the age of 66. Many cricketers will come and go but no one can replace Tony Greig.
